Access for All April: Building Support That Sticks Across Every Learning Area

Throughout April, EdUThrive has focused on one powerful idea: Access is the foundation of learning. Not something extra or something added later, but something intentionally designed from the very beginning.

Because when learners can’t access learning, they can’t show what they know.

What Do We Mean by Access?

At EdUThrive, we define access as:

The intentional removal of barriers so every learner can engage, participate, and demonstrate their understanding—across all learning areas.

Access is not about lowering expectations.

It’s about changing the pathway, not the outcome.

And when access is embedded consistently…

✨ support sticks

✨ confidence grows

✨ and learners thrive

Access Across the Learning Areas

This month, we explored how access looks across the curriculum—because inclusion isn’t confined to one subject.

English: Accessing Communication & Expression

We moved beyond the idea that writing is the only way to show understanding. Instead, we explored:

• Voice notes and speech-to-text

• Visual supports like sentence starters and story maps

• Drawing, acting, and creating as valid responses

• Pre-teaching vocabulary

• Chunking tasks

Different ways to respond = same opportunity to succeed.

Mathematics: Accessing Thinking & Problem Solving

We challenged the idea that maths is only abstract. Instead, we focused on:

• Using manipulatives to make thinking visible

• Drawing and visualising concepts

• Reducing language load

• Providing worked examples

• Modelling thinking aloud

Same maths. Different access points.

Science & HASS: Accessing Inquiry & Understanding

We explored how inquiry learning can be inclusive for all learners. We emphasised:

• Hands-on experiences before explanation

• Visual supports like diagrams and timelines

• Scaffolded questioning

• Choice in how learning is demonstrated

• Simplified and supported instructions

Inquiry should include—not exclude.

Arts, HPE & Technologies: Accessing Participation

We highlighted that participation is essential for access. We focused on:

• Adapting activities and tools

• Scaffolding participation

• Offering choice and voice

• Providing alternative ways to engage

• Prioritising inclusion over performance

If students can’t participate, they can’t access learning.

What We Learned

Across all learning areas, one message remained clear: Access benefits every learner—not just some. The strategies we explored are not about creating more work.

They are about making intentional, consistent adjustments that remove barriers.

Because often, it’s not the content that’s difficult, it’s the way it’s presented.

From Ideas to Impact: Support That Sticks

Our 2026 focus—Support That Sticks—is about consistency. Access only works when it is embedded across subjects, used by all staff, visible in everyday practice and sustained over time.

Not one strategy, once. But many small strategies, consistently applied.

Let’s keep building classrooms where barriers are reduced, participation is prioritised and every learner has the opportunity to succeed

Because when access is embedded, support truly sticks.
